  • Bauer Media Brands

Q started out as a music magazine published monthly in the United Kingdom. Originally it was to be called Cue (named after the act of cueing a record to play), but the name was changed so that it wouldn't be mistaken for a snooker magazine. Founders Mark Ellen and David Hepworth felt the music press of the time ignored a generation of older music buyers who were buying CDs — then still a new technology — from artists such as Paul Simon, Level 42, and Dire Straits. Modeled after Rolling StoneQ was first published in 1986, setting itself apart from much of the other music press with monthly production and higher standards of photography and printing, with an emphasis on style. The Q music brand has expanded to Radio and Television, with Q Radio and Q TV being music entertainment that specialises in indie, rock and alternative. Q also holds annual music awards in the UK, known as Q Awards. Since they began in 1990, the Q Awards have become one of Britain's biggest and best publicized music awards, helped in no small part by the often boisterous behaviour of the celebrities who attend the event. In spring 2010, Bauer caused controversy with its attempt to unilaterally impose a new contract on all photographers and writers, which takes away their copyright and off-loads liability for libel or copyright infringement from the publisher onto the contributor. 200 photographers and writers from Q and Bauer's other music magazines, Kerrang! and MOJO were reported as refusing to work under the new terms.
Kerrang! is a brand that specialises in Rock Music. It originally began as a magazine and in 2004 Kerrang Radio was launched. A Kerrang TV channel also exists and as of 2005, all of its programme content is music videos, the majority of which is open scheduled, for text requests from their playlist.

    Style Ideas

As my magazine is targeted at a certain audience group, i have researched styles that would appeal to young teenagers. In this i have considered clothes, makeup, hairstyles and other small details that would be included in my photo shoot.

Firstly, I would like my model to be wearing a white dress as i believe it shows a sense of innocence in the model, which should be shown to a young audience rather than for example using the colours black and red which could present sex appeal. Also i will make sure the dress isn't low cut because that would  be inappropriate for young teenagers therefore the dress will be almost neck high. I also think that a white dress would compliment the models makeup as the makeup will be more bold and colourful making it stand out more.

I have then chosen to style the model with curly hair. I believe this will make the model look fun and full of life for a vibrant pop magazine.

For makeup i have decided to use a more colourful option of pink so that it contrasts well against white.

Eyeshadow- The colour will be mostly pink although with a small amount of purple blended in to ad more definitions and layers.
Eyelashes- Fake eyelashes will be used although they will be natural looking so that it doesn't take the detail away from the eyeshadow.
Eyeliner- Black eyeliner will be used to define and shape the eye and add more style to the look.
Lips- The colour will be bright pink as a lot of attention will be on them as the poses my model will be doing include 'pouting' and blowing dust using the mouth. This then also matches with the eye makeup and blends them together.
Skin- Natural looking foundation will be used as young teenagers wont be wearing a lot of makeup at their age although will make the skin look smooth and even. Pink/bronzed powder will then be used to define the cheeks and sculpture the face more.

    Recce

There aren’t many hazards that could pose a health and safety risk where my photo shoot will take place as they will be taken in my house. There will although be wires around my room which someone could potentially trip over, although it will be made sure that the room is kept tidy and all wires will be kept as out the way as possible. I will also make sure that my model is aware of the wires so she can watch out for them, making a hazard less likely to occur. There may also be various objects on the floor which will have to be cleared or moved to provide more space for my model so that she doesn’t trip over anything or hurt herself due to lack of space. To ensure all risks are minimised I will clear the room before my model arrives giving plenty of space for her to get ready for the shoot and leaving the floor space clear. Once we have completed her makeup and used hair appliances I will then make sure everything is placed completely out of the way so there is no chance of her tripping over etc.
It is unlikely that the time of day/weather will affect the outcome of my photos as the shoot is taking place inside therefore weather wouldn’t be a problem. It would be best for the shoot to take place during the afternoon when there is less light shining through into the photo, although light could be blocked out and the shoot could still work either way.
I have considered the background to my photos and have found a suitable    place for the photo shoot to be held. As my magazine genre is pop and is aimed at teenage girls, I have chosen to use a pink coloured background to appeal to the audience. I have a large pink wall in my room with plenty of space around it which perfectly suits my magazine design.
I have considered lighting as the shoot will be taking place in my room where a lot of windows are causing bright lights to shine through. I have decided It would be best to do my shoot as it starts to get a bit darker so that the flash on my camera can be used to provide the right amount of light needed.
As the shoot is taking place in my house, I do not need permission for the photos to be taken. I have although asked and made sure that my parents are comfortable for the photos to be taken in my house and arranged a date where they are both out of the house so there are no distractions. I will arrange a certain time for my model to come for the shoot so that it is the best environment for the photos to be taken in.
I have already planned props to be used in the shoot and have made sure that everything will be available to use on the day. As the shoot is taking place in my house, it wont be a struggle to bring any props as I already have everything needed here. Also, my model has previously informed me that she will be able to get a lift to mine so there will be no problems for her getting to the shoot, although if any circumstances occur, my parents have agreed they would pick her up to bring her to our house. I have also informed my model that I have all the equipment needed and can provide her with any makeup and hair appliances but also that if she would prefer to use her own that is completely fine.

    Photo shoot Planning

    Photo shoot planning

I would like my images used to appeal to the audience by relating to them and inspiring them by how my model looks. For this I have considered the styles, makeup and hairstyles my model will have so it will attract young girls. i will also make sure that the interests they have are met and will intrigue them into wanting the magazine.
For my main image I am using my sister, Beth Cullen, as my model as she has agreed  that she feels comfortable with getting styled and dressed for my magazine. Also my friends, Hannah Lindsay and Chelsea Nesbit have agreed they would have some photographs taken if needed. These models could be used to put onto my contents giving a more visual effect to what the articles have to offer.
The props I have considered to use are lipstick, hairbrushes and makeup which should be what appeals to my target audience and should interest them into the magazine.
The colours that will be used in my main front image will include white or girly coloured clothes such as pink/purple to show the innocence of the model. I will also make sure that the models makeup matches her outfit and the over all colour design of my magazine to stick to the genre and colour scheme of my magazine. Before deciding this I had made sure that my models were aware of what they were going to look like to make sure they were comfortable so all changes could be changed and completed before the Photo shoot goes ahead.
My Photoshoot needs a strong lighting against preferably a plain pink background as this will make the model and the details stand out more. To achieve this I will use a large wall in my bedroom as the colour fits perfectly to what i need.

    Flat Plan

    Flat plan
    Front cover

    Rationale Questions

Colour Usage: On the front cover of my magazine I will use a selection of colours tat i feel work together and will appeal to an audience. The colours pink, light blue and yellow will be on my front cover as i feel these colours will attract a young teenage audience as they are bright and attractive. Also, my magazine is aimed towards young girls therefore i think the colours will appeal to them a lot more than males. I also chose these colours as it will make my model (main image) stand out more as the models outfit will be white therefore will contrast well against a bold background.

Image Usage: The main image will be large and bold taking up most of the cover and catching the audiences eye. The photo will be a mid shot so that it's close enough to see the full detail of the models face and makeup but also the top half of the models body will be shown  revealing the models style which will appeal to the audience group. The camera angle will be a direct shot so that the body and face of the model is directly shown. I haven't yet decided on the props that will be used in the photograph although I have thought about using a hairbrush, lipstick or a makeup brush as my audience will be interested in hair, makeup and looking good.

Text Usage: The text used will be quite informal as it can't come across too serious for such a young tartget audience as they would immediately loose interest. Although, no swearing will be as it is inappropriate for young girls to be reading but the text used will be fun and quite slang depending on the circumstances.

Layout and Font: The layout of my front cover will include various sell-lines around the main image using persuasive and inviting language which will make the audience want to read on. Also, the masthead and strapline will be along the top of the page in a bold font catching the audiences attention followed by the main image below filling up a large amount of the page leaving space for small details to go along the bottom. I will seperate the more important/appealing text from the less by changing the font, size and how bold it is making certain parts of the cover stand out such as the masthead and sell-lines.

    Contents page

    Rationale Questions

Colour Usage: For my contents page I would keep to the same colour scheme as my front cover as I think that it's important to keep the full magazine in coordination with each other and I believe it looks a lot more tidy and professional with matching colours as long as they match well with one another. Therefore, the colours used will carry on as pink, blue and yellow although black will also be used for certain text as it stands out well against coloured background.

Image Usage: The main image on my contents page will be a similar image to what is on my front cover as it is the main image therefore should be featured on the contents page so that the article is easy to find in the magazine. This image will although be different to the front cover to show a bigger variety of shots and poses. The other smaller three images will then be linked to the different headings on the navigation bar to give the reader something to visually look at rather than just the text.

Text Usage: The narrative voice will follow on the same from the front cover and will carry on to sound persuasive and intriguing to make the audience want to read the articles. I will also include various different techniques such as alliteration and imagery to encourage the reader to stay interested. The text will still sound quite informal to appeal to the young audience as I would like to make it sound quite personal to their age range. The title will them be shown against the top of the page with the contents running along the left side.

Layout and Font: The layout is the main detail I have considered whilst designing my contents page as I believe it has to be easy to read and understand so that the reader doesn't feel confused. To help the audience I have made a navigation bar with the articles and page number next to them to show where they are placed in the magazine. The main image will then be shown below the title on the right hand size which will be slightly larger than the other images as it is them main article. The three other images are then placed at the bottom of the page all with number next to them to tell the reader which title the are refered to and the page number they will be found on.

    Double page spread

    Rationale Questions

Colour Usage: The colour scheme will again contain the same colours of pink, blue and yellow with black text to stand out against certain backgrounds. This will keep the double page spread looking fun and edgy but also professional as the colours are consistant throughout the magazine.

Image Usage: A large amount of the right side page will consist of the main image which will also be similar to the front covers main image although in a different pose. This will another mid shot showing more detail in the picture. Another three images will then be used across the bottom of the left side page which I haven't yet decided what they will be although they will link to the article and support it by giving the audience something to look at.

Text Usage: The informal tone of text will still be consistently carried on throught the article giving it a fun and less serious vibe to match with a fun article. The title and caption will be made catchy as it will be drawn to the reader therefore needs to sound interesting to encourage the reader to want to read on. I may use alliteration or a rhetorical question to do this as I think they both sound effective and engaging.

Layout and Font: The layout of my double page spread will include a mixture of images and text so there isn't too much writing to read and it can be further explained with images. The title and banner will be spread along the top of the  pages in a large bold font so that the catchy text stands out with the large main image just below on the left. There will then be a small caption below the title with two columns of text making the layout look neat and understandable. Three images will then be placed along the bottom seperating more text which is on the right hand side of the page.

    Jarvis Cocker magazine cover

I have attempted to design a front cover music magazine for the artist Jarvis Cocker after having researched various magazines to understand designs and layouts. I believe i could have added a lot more text for example more sell lines and made the sell lines smaller in size to make 'Jarvis Cocker' and the masthead 'ROCK POP' stand out more.
